A young woman experiencing pelvic discomfort, she is grimacing in pain
|

If you've ever experienced urinary leakage, you might have googled what's going and came across 2 possibilities- stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Incontinence is a term used to describe the loss of bladder control resulting in accidental urinary leakage. It is a common problem that many people face, especially women going through pregnancy or post-partum, but it is NOT normal and should be addressed.

So how do you know which one you have?
Stress incontinence typically (but not always!) occurs as a result of weakness in the muscles within the pelvic floor and can occur with more stressful activities, such as coughing, jumping, or running. Urge incontinence involves a disconnect with the nerves connected between the brain and bladder that gives you the sensation of urgency, resulting in the SUDDEN urge of needing to go to the bathroom and often times, leaking as a result of not "getting there in time." Something interesting to note is that you can experience both forms of incontinence, also known as mixed incontinence.
