What is Pilates?

Pilates focuses on quality of movement rather than quantity. An exercise method developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s, Pilates is a whole- body exercise program designed to improve core and extremity strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, breathing, circulation, posture and alignment.

Pilates is a mind-body exercise method. The mental focus on the performance of each movement teaches us proper posture and alignment of our joints. This awareness of where our bodies are in space can then carry over into our day-to-day activities.   Pilates also teaches us proper activation of the right muscles to create precise, controlled, flowing movement.
